Alcohol Related Dementia - Know more about this neurological disorder
It is clear from the name itself that excessive intake of alcohol or alcoholic beverages leads to alcohol related dementia. The latter will impair various kinds of mental functions like learning, thinking and memory etc. This particular sub category of dementia may also be triggered by Wernickel syndrome and Korsakoff?s syndrome which are specific kinds of brain injury caused by over drinking.
Link between drinking and alcohol related dementia
With the sole exception of Alzheimer's disease, various types of dementia can result from alcohol abuse. Moderate drinking is good for health, for men it should be no more than 2 drinks per day and for women 1 drink per day - and can prevent Alzheimer's disease. But those who never drink or those who drink too heavily are at greater risk.
Alcoholic beverages like red wine contain anti oxidants which can potentially prevent Alzheimer causing factors and that is why a drink or two is recommended by doctors. However no conclusion as yet is concrete and conclusive because research is still going on.
Prevention
There is only one preventive measure - drink in moderate measure and exercise some self control. If you aren't careful enough you will easily slip from moderate drinking to heavy drinking.
Contributing factors of alcohol related dementia
Alcohol abuse can occur in episodic heavy phases or consistently. They are often accompanied by nutritional problems - one of the main contributory factors. Thiamine deficiency especially can cause damage to the brain along with other vitamin deficiencies.
Those women and men who guzzle down more than 4 and 6 standard alcoholic beverages respectively at an average per day can develop or are at increased risk of developing alcohol related dementia over a period of years.
