Causes Of Dementia
There are primary and secondary causes of dementia. The primary causes of dementia involve a wide number of neurological disorders, ranging from Alzheimer's disease to Pick's disease. Primary causes of dementia mostly result in impaired memory loss coupled with severely damaged thought processing. But the secondary causes of dementia are actually dementia-like symptoms that may develop as a result of the side effects of medications.
Primary Causes
All the neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Pick's disease, Lewy body dementia , Huntington disease, Parkinson's disease have their different roots of developing the problem and from there they progress to their worst end. While Alzheimer's is formed as a result of accumulation of bad protein, which gradually forms senile clusters, vascular dementia forms as an outcome of strokes impaired blood flow through the brain.
On the other hand, the symptoms of Pick's disease are sometimes difficult to separate from the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. However, the affected regions are different in each of the cases. In Pick's disease, frontal lobes and temporal lobes are affected and the disease may become apparent at 40 or 60 years of age, while Alzheimer's disease mostly occurs at the age of 80 or more.
Secondary Causes
When we grow older, we need more and more medications to keep ourselves fit. Sometimes these medications or some of these medications may affect us in adverse fashion. For example, sleeping pills, cold and flu medications, antidepressants, anti-diarrhea medications and the like have an impact of developing dementia symptoms in the long run.
Moreover, excessive alcohol intake and substance abuse have a direct link with dementia symptoms. Alcohol abuse may cause head injuries, which eventually leads to dementia symptoms. Vitamin deficiency also causes dementia symptoms. Inadequate supply of folic acid, vitamin E causes different diseases like impaired liver function, infections, all of these disorders can be the causes of dementia symptoms.
